When you see or hear an expert
interviewed on the news about an issue of constitutional law, it is
frequently Erwin Chemerinsky. A professor of both law and
political science at USC for 21 years, he will be moving to Duke
University Law School this fall. An author and a regular contributor to
law journals and the op-ed page of the LA Times, he has argued many
cases in federal appeals courts and, last year, his first case at the
U.S. Supreme Court. He is the writer or co-writer of briefs in many
high-profile appeals cases, including the currently pending U.S. Supreme
Court dispute on the confinement of prisoners from Afghanistan at
Guantanamo Bay Naval Station. Active in civic affairs (Los Angeles
Charter Commission and Ramparts scandal investigation board), his work
has been widely recognized. But most importantly for Sunset Hall, he is
an articulate, informed and outspoken champion of the Constitution and
the rights it protects.
A journalist of social and political
issues for more than 30 years, Robert Scheer draws upon a wealth of
experience and knowledge to create his weekly local and national
columns. A Vietnam correspondent between 1964 and 1969, he was also
managing editor and editor-in-chief of Ramparts magazine. From 1976 to
1993 he served as a national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times,
writing on such diverse topics as the Soviet Union, arms control,
national politics and the military. He is currently a contributing
editor for both the Times and The Nation magazine. On Tuesday
afternoons, Scheer can be heard on the political radio program, “Left,
Right And Center,” on KCRW, the NPR affiliate in Santa Monica. An
accomplished author, his most recent book is The Five Biggest Lies Bush
Told Us About Iraq. He teaches a course on media and society at USC’s
Annenberg School for Communication, and has received many honors for his
work.
